Welcome to the home page of ICSEM 6, the sixth International Congress on the Systematics & Ecology of Myxomycetes. The Organizing Committee sends you a warm invitation to participate in this meeting. At ICSEM 5 in Tlaxcala, Mexico, August 2005, you conferred a great honour in accepting Ukraine's proposal to host this Congress, the first of the series in a Slavonic country, and we are now anxious to merit that confidence by providing you with an intellectually stimulating meeting in the delightful environment of southern Crimea.

Crimea is an exceptionally beautiful area with varied and fascinating ecosystems, making it one of Europe's biodiversity hotspots and a natural destination for any student of biology. The scenery is spectacular, with a stunning mixture of mediterranean vegetation, vineyards, conifer forests, central European broadleaf forests, mountain top steppe meadows, extensive cave systems, tomillar ecosystems, salt marshes, sea cliff scenery and abundant steppes. In the east, there are even mud volcanos. The peninsula also has an enormously rich cultural and historical heritage, with ancient Scythian and Greek archaeological sites, cave towns of the Karaïm (a mysterious race of people indigenous to the peninsula), palaces of the Khans and the Tsars, churches, mosques, great ports, battlefields, Tatar cuisine, and memories of great poets and painters.

For those with no experience of Slavonic languages or the Cyrillic alphabet, however, travel to Crimea may seem a little daunting. We therefore wish to stress two points.

  • This Congress and its accompanying excursions are a wonderful opportunity for you to taste the delights of Crimea in the agreeable company of excellent interpreters who are also experienced scientists of your discipline.

  • While travel may be a little more expensive for this Congress than to, say, a mainstream European capital, every effort has been made to compensate for this by ensuring that the cost of your stay in Crimea will be as low as reasonably possible.

The Organizing Committee intends to maintain a flexible approach, so that needs of individual participants can properly be accommodated. Every member of the Organizing Committee is a dedicated scientist, and every one of them is excited by the prospect of this unique occasion: we all look forward with eagerness to seeing you in Crimea.
